Agartala, May 30 (FD) The Diocese of Agartala has alleged that officials of the Deputy Collector and Magistrate's office under the Barjala Revenue Circle, accompanied by police personnel, forcibly demolished a boundary wall located within its legally owned land, despite the matter being pending before the High Court of Tripura.
According to a complaint filed by the Diocese, it is the lawful owner of plots numbered 8548, 8550 and 8551, having purchased the land from a bona fide seller. The land was subsequently mutated in the Record of Rights, and the Diocese also secured a decree in its favour from the Court of the Civil Judge (Senior Division), Court No. 2, Agartala, West Tripura.
Sources associated with the case stated that the Revenue Authority later reclassified the disputed plots as government khas land, allegedly in contradiction to the civil court decree. Challenging the reclassification order, the Diocese filed Writ Petition (Civil) No. 358 of 2026 before the High Court of Tripura. The petition has been admitted and remains sub judice.
The Diocese further stated that a legal notice dated May 27, 2026, was served upon the Deputy Collector and Magistrate of Barjala Revenue Circle through advocate Prabal Kumar Ghosh, requesting the authorities not to interfere with its peaceful possession of the land while the matter was pending before the High Court.
Despite the notice and the ongoing judicial proceedings, officials of the Revenue Circle, accompanied by police personnel, allegedly carried out the demolition of the boundary wall on Saturday without lawful authority, the complaint alleged.
The Diocese has contended that the action constitutes unlawful interference with property and was undertaken despite the pendency of the matter before the High Court. It has also alleged that the demolition amounts to criminal mischief under the relevant provisions of law and may warrant judicial scrutiny, including possible contempt proceedings.
No official statement from the district administration or the Barjala Revenue Circle was available at the time of filing this report. The matter is expected to be taken up through appropriate legal channels. FD JK
