Dhruv Kapila, Tanisha Crasto advance to Asia Badminton Championships quarterfinals

In badminton, India’s mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, today. The Indian duo defeated Hong Wei Ye and Nicole Gonzales Chan of Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarterfinal round. After losing the first game by 12-21, Dhruv and Tanisha staged a strong comeback, winning the next two games, 21-16 and 21-18, to seal the match.
Meanwhile, another Indian mixed doubles pair, Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh, bowed out of the tournament after losing in the pre-quarterfinals today. They were defeated by the Chinese duo Wei Yaxin and Jiang Zhenbang in straight games, 11-21, 14-21.
In the women’s singles, two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu also exited the tournament after a hard-fought battle against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the second round. Sindhu lost by a scoreline of 11-21, 21-16, 16-21.
In men’s singles pre-quarterfinals, India’s Kiran George showcased a spirited fight but ultimately went down to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, 21-19, 13-21, 16-21. Another Indian shuttler, Priyanshu Rajawat, also exited the tournament after losing in straight games to Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, 14-21, 17-21.
Meanwhile, the Men’s Doubles pair of Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi and Hariharan Amsakarunan will face the Malaysian duo of Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh in the second round this afternoon.
