Agartala, Oct 15 (FD) In a thought-provoking event, a debate meeting was convened on Saturday evening, courtesy of the Dilip Sarkar Memorial Foundation. The central theme of discussion was the controversial proposition, "Should the euthanasia law be ratified?" The distinguished Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, presided over the inauguration of this intellectual gathering held at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan here on Saturday.
Commencing the debate, the Chief Minister lauded the Dilip Sarkar Memorial Foundation for its timely and pertinent initiative. He emphasised the significance of the debate, expressing his admiration for the organisation's commendable efforts. The late Advocate Dilip Sarkar, a stalwart in the state's legal arena, was extolled by the Chief Minister for his illustrious 49-year legal career, particularly in the realm of criminal law.
Advocate Dilip Sarkar also held the esteemed distinction of being the first designated public prosecutor of the Agartala branch of the Guwahati High Court, and he was subsequently appointed as the first special public prosecutor of the Tripura High Court by the state government.
The event witnessed eminent figures participating in the opening ceremony, including senior journalist Shekhar Dutta, distinguished cardiologist Dr. Kunal Sarkar, and the State Human Rights Commission Chairman, SC Das. This panel of luminaries set the tone for the ensuing debate, lending their expertise and insights to the occasion.
The debate meeting featured eight speakers representing various professions, each presenting compelling arguments both for and against the euthanasia law. Dr. Kunal Sarkar expertly moderated the event, ensuring a rigorous and productive exchange of ideas.
This intellectually stimulating event, marked by the remembrance of Advocate Dilip Sarkar's illustrious career and the pressing issue of euthanasia legislation, not only paid homage to the legal luminary but also paved the way for a critical discourse on a matter of societal importance.
The 'Dilip Sarkar Memorial Foundation' launched the annual debating programmeme last year, and it was reiterated that the programmeme will continue in the future as well. It was proven, if any proof were required, that people, including the younger generation, still retain interest in intellectual exercises well beyond their Android mobile and TV sets. FD SB
