Agartala, July 26 (FD) In a heartbreaking turn of events, the death toll from the electrocution incident during the return Rath Yatra in Tripura's Unakoti district has risen to nine.
The incident occurred on June 28 when the chariot of Lord Jagannath came into contact with a high-tension wire in the Kumarghat area, claiming the lives of eight people, including two children, and injuring 16 others.
The latest victim, 32-year-old Droupadi Nama, had been battling for her life in a hospital in Guwahati, Assam.
Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on July 23. Her five-and-a-half-year-old son had also lost his life in the same electrocution accident.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, upon visiting the accident site, ordered a probe by the district magistrate.
However, the findings of the inquiry have yet to be disclosed to the public. A Suo motu case has been registered against the organiser, but no arrests have been made so far.
The police have registered a case against the organiser, although no arrests have been made thus far. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures during religious processions, and it is alleged that the tragedy occurred as the Rath was returning to the temple through an unapproved route without informing the administration.
