Deadline of Bru rehabilitation extended as Union Home Minister accepts Tripura CM's proposal

Agartala, Sep 21 (FD) The Deadline of rehabilitation of Bru people in Tripura has extended following the request of Tripura’s Chief Minister in a review meeting on Tuesday in New Delhi.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the status of resettlement of Bru migrant families in Tripura with Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, an official release said.
Shah expressed satisfaction over the progress made by the State Government so far in regard to the settlement made in pursuance of the Agreement signed by MHA with the State Government in January, 2020, the press release said.
According to the press release the Union Home Minister has accepted the Tripura Chief Minister's proposal and gave in-principle approval for extension of timeline for completion of resettlement process and to continue extending financial assistance to the Bru families.
The resettlement of the Brus was supposed to end by 2022 but due to several reasons it could not be done within the specified timeline.
It is learnt that the total number Bru migrants who had been found eligible for the resettlement pact stands at 37,136.
The Bru (Reang) families migrated to North Tripura due to ethnic violence in the western part of Mizoram in October 1997. Approximately 30,000 (5,000 families) Bru migrants had given shelter in six relief camps set-up in Kanchanpur district of North Tripura then. FD PD
