Agartala, Oct 3 (FD) The CPI(M), the principal opposition party in Tripura, has started organisational preparations for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in the state, with the party planning to focus its campaign on civic governance, accountability, public services and people’s rights.
Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said the party had initiated preparations across urban areas as part of its electoral strategy. He said the party would continue its public outreach programmes while also remaining engaged with people in areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
“We have fought earlier and we will fight again. We are also receiving a good response from the people,” Chaudhury said. He added that the upcoming civic elections would provide an opportunity to highlight issues concerning urban administration, public services and the day-to-day problems faced by residents.
Chaudhury criticised the performance of the BJP-led government in urban areas and said development should not be limited to physical infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, water supply and electricity. According to him, urban civic administration should also take into account the social and cultural requirements of residents while maintaining transparency and accountability.
He alleged that despite government expenditure and repeated announcements regarding development targets, residents continued to face problems related to roads, lanes and drainage systems. He also claimed that such issues were visible even in newly developing urban areas.
“The government frequently announces development targets, but they remain unfulfilled. The situation remains the same even in newly developing urban areas,” he alleged.
The CPI(M) leader further alleged that extortion and the influence of what he described as “mafias” had affected people’s daily lives. He claimed that residents were being pressured to pay commissions in activities including land transactions, house repairs and the purchase of construction materials such as bricks, cement and steel rods.
“The people are frustrated with such situations. The question is how to overcome them and unite people to establish a democratic and accountable administration,” Chaudhury said.
The CPI(M) is expected to raise these issues during its campaign as preparations for the ULB elections progress. The party said its outreach would focus on mobilising people around concerns related to civic services, transparency, democratic administration and accountability.
The preparations come as political parties in Tripura gear up for the upcoming urban local body elections, with civic governance and local development expected to remain among the key issues during the campaign. FD JK
