Agartala, July 26 (FD) CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday announced a series of statewide political programmes and mass movements over the coming weeks, focusing on issues such as law and order, the alleged mysterious death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar, deteriorating national highways, unemployment, rising prices and the agrarian crisis.
Addressing a press conference following the party's two-day State Committee meeting, Chaudhury said the committee had adopted several resolutions aimed at mobilising public opinion against what he described as the BJP-led government's failure to ensure good governance and safeguard public welfare.
The State Committee, he said, paid tribute to late DGP Anurag Dhankhar. Describing him as "an exceptionally honest, dedicated and competent All India Service officer," Chaudhury said the circumstances surrounding his untimely death had raised several unanswered questions.
Reviewing the political situation in Tripura since mid-June, the CPI(M) leader alleged that law and order had deteriorated significantly during the BJP government's eight-and-a-half years in office. He claimed that democratic and constitutional rights were being routinely violated and cited incidents in Belonia, Mohanpur, Kamalpur and several other areas, alleging attacks on CPI(M) workers, supporters and party offices.
Reiterating the party's demand for a judicial probe into the DGP's death, Chaudhury called for an investigation under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.
Announcing the party's forthcoming programmes, Chaudhury said the CPI(M) would organise peaceful demonstrations in Agartala over the poor condition of national highways and hold public meetings in subdivisions affected by deteriorating road infrastructure, particularly along the Teliamura and Khowai routes.
He further announced that on August 10, the party, along with farmers', agricultural labourers' and workers' organisations, would participate in a nationwide campaign highlighting agrarian distress, unemployment, rising fuel prices and inflation. As part of the movement, a 'Jail Bharo' programme will be organised across all subdivisions of the state.
The CPI(M) will also hold the State Conference of the All India Kisan Sabha from September 1 to 3, culminating in a massive public rally at Astabal Ground in Agartala. Chaudhury appealed to party workers and supporters to make the rally a record-breaking gathering to strengthen public opinion against what he termed anti-farmer and anti-worker policies.
The Opposition leader also said the party had begun preparations for the forthcoming Village Committee and municipal elections. He alleged attempts to influence constitutional institutions and criticised the replacement of the State Election Commissioner. Questioning the appointment of Pradip Kumar Chakraborty as the new State Election Commissioner, Chaudhury raised allegations of procedural irregularities.
Targeting the Tipra Motha-led Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Chaudhury alleged large-scale irregularities in nearly 200 appointments, claiming they were made without advertisement or interviews. He said a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the appointments had been admitted by the Tripura High Court and demanded that the findings of the reported inquiry committee be made public.
Chaudhury said the CPI(M) would continue to intensify its political campaign across Tripura in the coming months, focusing on issues such as governance, corruption, unemployment, inflation, public infrastructure and the protection of democratic rights.
The BJP government and the TTAADC have not responded to the allegations made by the CPI(M) at the time of filing this report.
He questioned what he described as contradictory public statements regarding the circumstances of the officer's death and expressed reservations about the ability of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by the Superintendent of Police of West Tripura district, to conduct an impartial inquiry.
He informed reporters that both the CPI(M) and the Left Legislative Party had separately written to the Governor, urging intervention to ensure an independent and transparent investigation. FD JK
