Agartala, July 27 (FD) The mysterious death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar took a fresh political turn on Monday as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) intensified its demand for an independent judicial inquiry by submitting two separate memoranda to Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu at Raj Bhavan.
A nine-member delegation of CPI (M) MLAs, led by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, met the Governor in the morning and urged him to ensure that the investigation into the DGP’s death is conducted under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court. The delegation argued that judicial oversight is essential to guarantee transparency, impartiality and public confidence in the probe.
Later in the day, a five-member senior CPI (M) delegation headed by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also called on the Governor. They submitted a separate memorandum reiterating the party’s demand for a High Court-monitored investigation into what they described as the "unnatural death" of the state's top police officer.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sarkar said the Governor acknowledged the need to uncover the circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death.
"The Governor himself said that the mystery behind this unnatural death needs to be unravelled. He did not oppose our demand for a High Court-monitored investigation and assured us that he would examine the matter," Sarkar told reporters.
The CPI (M) has consistently maintained that only an investigation supervised by a sitting High Court judge can dispel public doubts and ensure that every aspect of the case is examined independently and impartially.
The renewed demand comes even as the Tripura Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a detailed inquiry into the case.
According to an official order issued by the Office of the Director General of Police, the SIT has been formed to investigate the case by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak and comprises Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban) Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Shubhojit Deb, the investigating officer in the case.
The order authorises the SIT to seek assistance from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other police unit whenever necessary. It also permits the team to utilise technical and forensic expertise from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Tripura Police Crime Branch. FD JK
