Agartala, Oct 13 (FD) The political landscape in Tripura is currently abuzz with controversy surrounding the invitation extended by senior Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman to 'Tipra Motha' supremo Pradyot Kishore, encouraging him to join the Congress and take on a leadership role.
While Roybarman's move has ignited a storm of debate, Congress workers and leaders have taken to the streets to voice their concerns.
Yesterday, a significant number of Congress members initiated a protest at the TSECL office in the Bhuturia area. Their demand was clear: an immediate rollback of the recently increased power tariff. Similar demonstrations were organized in Udaipur, emphasizing their discontent.
Congress leaders addressing the crowds went further, calling for the resignation of Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. They argued that despite Tripura being a power-surplus state, exporting electricity to neighboring Bangladesh, the government has raised power tariffs. Instead of addressing issues like power theft and transmission losses, they have unfairly burdened the people with tariff hikes.
"The government has failed to increase power generation and ensure a steady power supply," stated Congress leaders, including PCC President Asish Kumar Saha. "Given the lack of infrastructure improvement, raising tariffs is entirely unjustified, and it should be reversed."
Saha criticized the ruling BJP government for not generating any additional power and for their inadequate maintenance efforts. He stressed that any government should only consider raising tariffs when they have substantially improved power supply without disruptions.
Asish Kumar Saha led the procession of Congress workers to the TSECL office, while local-level Congress leaders orchestrated the protest march in Udaipur. Notably, the government has not yet responded to these protests from the Congress. FD SB
