Agartala, Aug 31 (FD) Veteran Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was suspended from the Tripura Legislative Assembly for the remainder of Monday’s proceedings on charges of unparliamentary conduct, following a heated confrontation over the alleged suicide note of former Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar.
The suspension was announced by Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia after Roy Barman repeatedly raised the issue in the House, leading to protests and slogan-shouting by Congress and CPI(M) legislators.
At the beginning of the day’s proceedings, Roy Barman attempted to raise the issue of the former DGP’s death and accused Chief Minister Manik Saha of allegedly misleading the House through what he described as a false statement on the matter.
Even before the commencement of the scheduled business, Roy Barman continued raising the issue after the Speaker entered the House. Speaker Jamatia, however, directed him to wait until Zero Hour following the completion of Question Hour. Roy Barman subsequently relented temporarily.
As soon as Zero Hour began, the Congress MLA again raised the issue, alleging that the former DGP had left behind a suicide note, a claim which he said was supported by statements made by Dhankar’s wife. He further alleged that the Chief Minister had not provided the correct information to the Assembly and claimed that the alleged suicide note had been suppressed by a police officer at the behest of the government.
Roy Barman’s allegations were strongly supported by CPI(M) MLAs, who also stood up and joined the demand for the alleged suicide note to be brought before the public.
Amid protests from the Treasury benches, Congress and CPI(M) members, led by Roy Barman, entered the well of the House and began shouting slogans.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath intervened during the uproar and asked Roy Barman to submit documentary evidence before the Speaker in support of his allegations. However, Roy Barman and the protesting legislators continued their demonstration in the well of the House.
Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Jamatia asking the members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue, the protest persisted.
The Speaker subsequently announced the suspension of Roy Barman from the House for the remainder of the day’s proceedings and directed the marshals to escort him out.
Following the suspension, Roy Barman and other Congress and CPI(M) legislators initially left the House. While the CPI(M) members and other Congress MLAs later returned and participated in the proceedings, Roy Barman remained outside the House. FD JK
