Agartala, May 25 (FD) Former Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president and senior Congress MLA Gopal Roy on Sunday staged a symbolic protest against the repeated hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and LNG by the BJP-led central government.
Roy travelled on a bicycle from his residence in Jogendra Nagar to the State Guest House in Agartala to attend a meeting of the District Electric Authority Board (DEAB). Accompanied by his two officially allotted Personal Security Officers (PSOs), the Congress leader covered a distance of over three kilometres to reach the venue and returned home in the same manner after the meeting, completing a bicycle journey of more than six kilometres in total.
Speaking to reporters, Gopal Roy said the bicycle ride was intended as a mark of protest against the continuous increase in fuel prices imposed by the Centre.
“It is extremely unfortunate that the Modi-led BJP government has burdened the country’s economy by increasing the prices of petroleum products four times within a span of a few days. The repeated hikes have directly affected common people and increased financial hardship across the country,” Roy said.
He stated that the protest was part of a nationwide programme announced by the Congress high command to highlight the impact of rising fuel prices on ordinary citizens.
The Congress MLA also demanded the immediate withdrawal of both state and central taxes levied on petroleum products to provide relief to the public. According to him, the continued rise in fuel prices would inevitably trigger an increase in transportation costs and lead to a sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities. FD JK
