Congress demands a probe into the incident of Gandatwisa by a sitting high court judge

Agartala, July 31 (FD) The opposition Congress in Tripura today demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into the recent incidents of death of one youth and subsequent rioting at Gandatwisa in Dhalai district.
A five-member delegation of the party led by Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Asish Kumar Saha visited the riot hit place on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress Bhavan here today, Saha alleged that the incidents of killing of the 19-year old college student and subsequent rioting had taken in presence of the police and the administration had failed to provide proper food and shelter to the riot hit people, which pressed them to demand for a probe by a sitting High Court judge.
A 19-year old college student, Rameswar Reang was seriously injured in a village fair by a group of youths, when he tried resisting their attempt to beat a physically challenged man on July 7 last. He succumbed to his injuries at G.B Pant hospital here on July 12.
His death led to rioting and arson at Gandatwisa, in which 40 families were rendered homeless and their houses smashed, which forced them to take shelter in government buildings.
The delegation visited the house of the deceased, riot-hit houses and the people, who were sheltered in the camps.
Sudip Roy Burman, the lone Congress MLA, who was also part of the delegation demanded adequate compensation to the family of the deceased and the riot hit families.
Rs five lakh was given to the next of kins of the deceased and Rs 25000 was given to each riot hit families.
Burman said, “The amount was paid to them was meagre. We demand a government job to one of the family members of Reang and more compensation to the families still sheltered in camps for repairing of their houses”.
He said for confidence building permanent security camps should be set up in those villages and the displaced people should be brought back home by repairing their houses.
Burman also alleged that the victims were living in extreme unhygienic condition in camps. FD JK
