In Jammu and Kashmir, a complete bandh is being observed today across the Jammu division as organisations from all walks of life supported the bandh call to protest the killings in the Pahalgam tourist resort. Akashvani Jammu Correspondent reports that protests have erupted throughout the UT, with people demanding justice.
In Jammu, various social, political, and trade organisations have taken to the streets, leading to the deployment of additional police and paramilitary forces in sensitive areas to ensure peace and order. Markets, shops, and transport services remain shut as citizens express solidarity with the victims and call for decisive action against terrorism. Normal life has come to a standstill following a complete shutdown in J&K.
Most of the shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut in Jammu city. Only the shops dealing in essential commodities were open across the city. Public transport was also sparse, but private vehicles were plying normally. Security has been beefed up across the region, especially at vital tourist spots. Private schools were also shut across the region, but government schools were open.
As a mark of respect and solidarity with the victims and their families, the Private Schools’ Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) announced the closure of all private schools across Jammu and Kashmir. The effect of the shutdown was also witnessed in the other district headquarters of the region.
Peaceful protests were also held at several places in the city, with the protestors denouncing the attack. They called for the stopping of the killing of innocent people. Several political parties, socio-religious organisations, trade bodies, and civil society groups called for the shutdown in Jammu to protest against the attack in Baisaran meadows of the Pahalgam resort in Anantnag district.
The ruling National Conference, PDP, Peoples’ Conference, and Apni Party were among the political outfits that supported the shutdown to protest the attack. Security has been beefed up across the region, and security personnel were deployed in strength at vital installations, important spots and the entry and exit points of the city as well as other districts.
The forces were maintaining a strong vigil at the important places and establishments. Checkpoints have been established at several places in the city as well as other districts. Security forces were conducting checks and frisking of vehicles and people at several places.
