Agartala, Apr 23 (FD) In a strong warning amid rising post-election tensions, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha alleged a “deliberate conspiracy” to incite communal unrest in parts of the state and asserted that strict action would be taken against those involved.
After spending the day visiting violence-affected areas in Sepahijala and South Tripura districts on Wednesday, the Chief Minister chaired a high-level late-night review meeting with senior police and civil administration officials to assess the situation and direct enforcement measures.
Tension has reportedly escalated in pockets of Khowai, Teliamura, Takarjala, Boxanagar and Sabroom subdivision, particularly under the 28 Shilachari–Manu Bankul ADC constituency, following the BJP’s victory in the elections to the Tripura Tribal areas Autonomus District Council (TTAADC), the results for which were announced on April 17 last.
The incumbent Tipra Motha party won 24 seats in 28-member tribal council.
Official and party sources alleged that certain elements were attempting to disrupt normal life by creating disturbances in marketplaces and densely populated areas.
Incidents of arson and vandalism targeting multiple BJP party offices have also been reported, raising concerns over post-poll violence. Accompanied by the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), Dr Saha visited the affected locations, inspected damaged properties, and interacted with local leaders and party workers.
During his visit to South Tripura, the Chief Minister met residents affected by the violence and assured them of the government’s commitment to restoring peace and maintaining law and order. “All necessary measures are being taken to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of every citizen,” he said.
In Sepahijala district, Dr Saha also visited families of victims, including Anil Kumar Debbarma, Suresh Debbarma, Khaken Debbarma and Jawaharlal Debbarma, expressing solidarity and assuring full government support.
Addressing the media, the Chief Minister claimed that the attacks were not limited to party workers but also targeted civilians perceived to be BJP supporters. “The attempt to incite riots in the name of politics will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said, adding that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice.
The administration has stepped up security in sensitive areas to prevent further deterioration of the situation. FD JK
