CM Saha pushes long-term water security plan

Agartala, June 24 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday directed officials to prepare a long-term water resource management strategy for the state, stressing the need for sustainable solutions to meet future drinking water demands.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on the proposed Gomati River-based water supply project for Agartala at the TIFT War Room, Saha said the initiative should serve not only the capital's present needs but also ensure water security for future generations across Tripura.

Good Governance Department Secretary Kiran Gitte presented an assessment of Agartala’s current and projected water demand, highlighting the limitations of the existing groundwater-dependent system. Officials noted that rapid urbanisation, population growth and recurring dry-season shortages have increased the need for a reliable surface water source.

The proposed project envisages drawing water from the Maharani Barrage in Udaipur on the Gomati River and developing transmission pipelines, reservoirs and treatment facilities to ensure uninterrupted supply.
The Chief Minister instructed departments to work in mission mode and prepare an integrated state-wide water management roadmap. He also emphasized reducing water wastage, improving resource utilisation and strengthening rainwater harvesting and storage systems to build reserves for lean seasons.

The meeting further discussed the creation of a permanent Gomati-based water supply system and dedicated raw water reservoirs to enhance availability during dry months.

Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, MLA Abhishek Debroy and senior officials attended the meeting. FD JK
