Agartala, June 21 (FD) Stressing the importance of yoga in promoting a healthy, disease-free and balanced lifestyle, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Saturday urged people to make yoga an integral part of their daily routine. He made the appeal while participating in the state-level celebration of International Yoga Day at the International Exhibition Ground in Hapania.
Addressing a large gathering, the Chief Minister said yoga and pranayama, deeply rooted in India's anc
ient cultural and spiritual heritage, have evolved into globally recognised practices for enhancing physical fitness, mental well-being and overall quality of life. He noted that in an age marked by rising lifestyle diseases, stress and mental health concerns, yoga offers an effective and sustainable solution for achieving holistic wellness.
“Yoga is not merely a form of physical exercise; it is a way of life that establishes harmony between the body, mind and spirit. Regular practice helps individuals lead healthier, more disciplined and mindful lives,” Dr. Saha said.
Highlighting India's contribution to the global wellness movement, the Chief Minister said the worldwide acceptance of yoga has significantly enhanced the country’s cultural and philosophical influence. He recalled that the proposal to observe International Yoga Day was introduced at the United Nations in 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and received overwhelming support from member nations. Subsequently, June 21 was declared International Yoga Day and has been observed globally every year since 2015.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” Dr. Saha said the focus reflects the growing need to maintain physical fitness, mental resilience and emotional well-being throughout every stage of life. He emphasized that yoga can play a crucial role in ensuring active and healthy ageing while improving overall quality of life.
The state-level programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from government officials, yoga practitioners, students, security personnel and members of the public. Participants joined a mass yoga demonstration and performed various yoga asanas and breathing exercises under expert guidance.
The Chief Minister also took part in the session and encouraged citizens of all age groups to embrace yoga as a daily practice for better health and personal well-being. He said widespread adoption of yoga would contribute significantly to building a healthier, more productive and harmonious society.
The event was part of the nationwide observance of International Yoga Day, with programmes organised across the country to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga and encourage its adoption as a powerful tool for long-term health and wellness. FD JK
