CM Dr. Saha acts fast to resolve flooding in Belonia

Agartala, May 22 (FD) Heavy rainfall recently triggered flooding in the low-lying areas of Ishanchandranagar and Ballarmukh under the Belonia sub-division in South Tripura district. In response, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha promptly instructed the Public Works Department (PWD – Water Resources) to initiate immediate action for effective drainage and flood relief.
Following the Chief Minister's directive, Chief Engineer of the PWD (Water Resources), Sudhan Debbarma, and South Tripura District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P., along with other officials, visited the affected areas on May 19 to assess the situation firsthand.
To alleviate waterlogging, a new drainage channel was swiftly constructed, linking the flood-hit areas to the Ballarmukh stream’s catchment zone. The drain, built on an emergency basis, measures approximately 70 meters in length, 2 to 3 meters in width, and 4 to 6 feet in depth. This channel has already begun to effectively release the stagnant water from Ishanchandranagar and Ballarmukh.
According to the PWD, plans are underway to excavate a larger drainage system to ensure long-term flood mitigation. Once completed, this initiative is expected to prevent future monsoon-related flooding in these vulnerable regions of the Belonia sub-division. PRESS RELEASE
