CM asks parties not to politicise DGP's death, assures fair SIT Probe

Agartala, July 25 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday appealed to political parties not to politicise the unnatural death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, asserting that the government has already constituted a high-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough probe.

The SIT, headed by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, was constituted by DGP (in-charge) G.S. Rao to investigate the circumstances surrounding Dhankar's death.

Dhankar was found hanging in the washroom attached to his chamber at the Tripura Police Headquarters in Agartala on July 20.
Speaking to reporters, Saha said the investigation would be conducted professionally by a senior police team and urged political parties to allow the probe to proceed without interference.

"The investigation into the DGP's death will be carried out by a high-level police team. Political parties should not have any concerns about the investigation. It would not be appropriate to politicise the issue," the Chief Minister said.

His remarks came amid continued demands from the opposition CPI(M) for a judicial inquiry under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court, contending that an independent probe was necessary to ensure transparency.

Before joining the Tripura Police as DGP, Dhankar had served in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he led the investigation into the alleged ₹13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud involving diamantaire Nirav Modi and the reinvestigation into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. FD JK
