Agartala, Sept 18 (FD) A Class XI student of Bardowali Dwadash Shreni School in Agartala died on Thursday morning after an alleged suicide attempt, with his family and classmates accusing a teacher and three fellow students of harassment, humiliation and physical assault following a dispute over a mobile phone.
The deceased was identified as Arman Hossain, a Class XI student of the school. According to the reported allegations, the incident began after Arman brought a mobile phone to school.
The matter reportedly came to the attention of teacher Sujit Sutradhar, who allegedly confiscated the phone. Subsequently, Arman is said to have made allegations against Sutradhar and three classmates—Jabed Mia, Irafan Hossain and Emti Mohammad—claiming that he was subjected to humiliation and physical harassment.
According to the allegations cited in the report, the teacher later informed Arman’s mother that her son had committed an act for which he should not be allowed to continue at the school and warned that he would have to leave. The family further alleged that Arman’s mother and brother were also humiliated during the episode, leaving the student in severe distress.
The report states that Arman’s mother later found him attempting to take his own life at their residence. He was rescued in a critical condition and taken to Tripura Medical College for treatment. As his condition remained serious, he was subsequently shifted to GB Pant Hospital.
Despite medical treatment, Arman reportedly died on Thursday morning.
Following his death, his classmates expressed anger and alleged that the tragedy was connected to the treatment he received following the mobile-phone incident. They demanded action against the teacher and the three students named in the allegations.
However, the allegations have not been independently established. A detailed investigation will be required to determine the sequence of events, whether any harassment or physical assault occurred, and whether there was a direct connection between the alleged incidents and the student’s death.
The incident has also prompted concerns over the handling of disciplinary matters involving school students and the need for appropriate safeguards, counselling and sensitivity when dealing with minors.
Arman’s family and classmates have reportedly demanded a thorough investigation and appropriate action against anyone found responsible. FD JK
