Clashes between two communities over occupation of land at Killa, tension prevails high

Agartala, Sept 12 (FD) Tension prevailed high at Riabari and adjoining areas of Killa under Gomati district of Tripura following clashes between two communities over occupation on a piece of land inside the forest land which left at least 22 persons injured.
Police said the trouble started last night when a group of tribals armed with lethal weapons attacked a Muslim settlement of 28 families leaving at least ten injured.
Muslim families stated that they were allowed by the administration to settle in the area and a case is pending in a local court over the issue.
Sub-divisional police officer of Udaipur Dhurba Nath said, “Possession of land is the bone of contention between the two communities. When the issue is pending in court no pucca constructions are allowed in the area. Trouble started after some maintenance works were taken by the local Muslim community people and came under attack by the tribal people”.
He said the Muslim people also retaliated and tension prevailed high in the area.
Nath said, heavy contingent of police was rushed in the area, but irate mob launched an attack on police and set ablaze a police vehicle. However, the situation is under control now.
He said security was beefed up in the area and patrolling by state paramilitary Tripura State Rifles (TSR) were deployed there. FD JK
