China today launched a new round of military exercises around Taiwan in its latest warning to the island’s democratic government. The Chinese military said that the drills served as a powerful deterrent to separatist forces advocating Taiwanese independence.
The spokesperson for the theatre command said that they organised its army, navy, air and rocket forces to close in on Taiwan Island. He informed that the drills were carried out from multiple directions around Taiwan and focused on sea and air combat readiness patrols, seizing comprehensive control, sea and land strikes, and blocking key areas and roads.
China, which claims Taiwan as part of its mainland, has conducted similar military exercises in the recent past, but this is the first major military exercise around Taiwan since US President Donald Trump assumed power for a second tenure.
Taiwan’s Presidential Office strongly condemned China’s actions, while its defence ministry announced it had deployed military vessels and aircraft to monitor the drills. China, which considers Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy, part of its territory has pledged to take control of the island by force if necessary.
