Agartala, Aug 15 (FD) On the solemn occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha addressed a gathering in Agartala, where he highlighted the deep wounds inflicted by the 1947 Partition on generations in India.
Dr. Saha said that the Partition occurred against the wishes of a majority and was orchestrated by "two people" whose identities he did not disclose.
Contrary to common perception, Saha pointed out that opposition to Partition was not limited to any particular religious community. He stated that leaders and individuals from various faiths, including Muslims, Sikhs, and others, were against the division.
Saha passionately defended Mahatma Gandhi's stance against Partition, recalling that Gandhi had famously declared that Partition would happen only over his lifeless body.
The Chief Minister recounted the unimaginable horrors and lasting effects of the Partition, which ruptured India's cultural and historical fabric. They spoke of the countless refugees who were forced to flee their homes in 1947 and during the 1971 conflict.
The trauma of Partition, he said, must not be forgotten, and this was the impetus behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.
Minister Tinku Roy echoed Saha's sentiment, stating that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day would provide valuable insights into the truths of the Partition, benefiting the younger generation.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarma described the Partition as a scandalous chapter in human history, remarking that even Tripura bore the brunt of the division. FD SB
