Caste survey to benefit weaker sections: MP Rajib

Agartala, May 02 (FD) The president of the Tripura unit of the ruling BJP, Rajib Bhattachrya on Friday thanked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his decision to conduct a caste survey to identify the weaker sections of the country.
Addressing a press conference he said, “This decision of conducting a caste based survey in the National census would benefit the most marginalized sections of the country as they would be identified and would get all benefits in Government schemes.”
The Congress had always used it as a political tool rather than a sincere effort to uplift the backward people, he said adding Modi Government believes in uplifting of the backward people and development of all people, Bhattacharya, who is also an MP in Rajyasabha said.
He said in 2010 then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had taken initiative to explore the possibility of including the caste in the census and the Congress led UPA government only carried out a separate Caste based survey, but it was not integrated into national survey and the survey was not also published due to error.
The Union cabinet on April 30 approved a proposal for undertaking a caste census.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress in Tripura distributed sweets among the party activists and greeted the leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi for his ‘unequivocal’ movement for inclusion of the cast based data in the national census.
“This would identify the weaker and vulnerable sections of the country and they would be benefitted in getting benefits from government schemes”, said Asish Saha, the President of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee. FD JK
