Badarpur, May 21 (FD) Following the announcement of a major maintenance and rehabilitation project on a key bridge in South Assam’s Badarpur, officials have assured that traffic movement to Tripura will remain largely unaffected.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has ordered the suspension of vehicular movement for two months on the Gammon Bridge over the Barak River to facilitate essential repair work. The bridge, a vital part of National Highway 6, links Assam with Tripura and other northeastern states.
Despite the temporary closure, Tripura Transport Secretary C K Jamatia stated that traffic flow to the state is continuing smoothly. “Tripura is unlikely to be affected by the major bridge repairing work over the Barak River in Assam’s Badarpur,” Jamatia told PTI over phone from New Delhi. “Vehicles are returning to the state as scheduled. An alternative route via Silchar–Kalain–Guwahati is operational for vehicular movement.”
According to the NHIDCL order, signed by Managing Director Krishan Kumar, the suspension of movement is effective from May 21 to July 20, 2025. The temporary closure was enacted under Section 31 and Section 33 of the Control of National Highways (Land & Traffic) Act, 2002.
The NH-6, also known as the Assam–Agartala National Highway, serves as a critical transport corridor connecting Tripura with the rest of India via Assam and Meghalaya. The 60-day suspension applies specifically to the bridge section near Badarpur in Assam’s Cachar district.
Officials emphasizeda that the repair is a preventive measure aimed at long-term infrastructure stability and safety. “Traffic movement on the highway has not completely stopped yet,” said Jamatia, citing the latest reports received by the Tripura administration.
With the alternative route in place and steady monitoring by state authorities, disruptions to essential transport and supply chains are expected to be minimal.
