Dhaka, Aug 21 (FD) Veteran BNP leader and former minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected President of Bangladesh, filling the vacancy created following the premature resignation of Md Shahabuddin, who had been nominated to the presidency during the Awami League regime.
Mirza Fakhrul, one of the longest-serving secretary generals of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has long been regarded as a seasoned and politically experienced leader with a reputation for moderation and pragmatic political thinking.
Sources in Bangladesh said Fakhrul has often represented a relatively measured and politically prudent voice within the BNP. Throughout his political career, he has advocated policies based on what he considers Bangladesh's long-term national interests and has sought to maintain a pragmatic approach to major political and national issues.
However, his political outlook has not always aligned with all sections of the present BNP leadership. According to political observers, differences have emerged within the ruling establishment over political strategy, particularly regarding the growing influence of conservative and religious forces and the future role of the Awami League in Bangladesh's political landscape.
Fakhrul's elevation to the presidency is also being seen as a move to provide the veteran leader with an honourable constitutional position after decades of active involvement in party politics.
His election was widely expected, given the BNP's decisive strength in the National Parliament, whose members elect the President.
Born in 1948 in Thakurgaon district, Mirza Fakhrul completed his early education in his native district before pursuing higher studies in Dhaka. He entered politics at an early stage and went on to hold several important responsibilities during the political era of former president Ziaur Rahman.
Over the years, he emerged as one of the BNP's most prominent leaders and eventually became the party's secretary general. He continued to play a crucial role in maintaining the party organisation during a prolonged period of political uncertainty, including the years when current BNP leader Tarique Rahman remained outside Bangladesh.
Political observers say Mirza Fakhrul enjoys considerable respect across different sections of Bangladeshi society, including minority communities, largely because of his relatively liberal and inclusive approach to politics.
His elevation to the presidency could therefore carry wider political significance at a time when Bangladesh continues to navigate a complex and rapidly evolving political environment.
The appointment is likely to be closely watched for its potential impact on the internal dynamics of the BNP, the country's broader political balance and the future direction of Bangladesh's governance and democratic institutions. FD JK
