Agartala, Oct (FD) In an incident, two unruly Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers allegedly assaulted a Gramme Rojgar Sahayak (GRS) at the Kadamtala block office in North Tripura.
The incident occurred yesterday when the workers demanded wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) without having done any work. The GRS, Bidyut Das, was attacked when he refused to pay the unjustified wages.
The altercation took place on a fateful afternoon when Saifuddin and Abdul Aziz, identified as BJP activists from South Kadamtala village, stormed the local Panchayat office.
They allegedly assaulted Bidyut Das, the GRS in charge, over a dispute regarding MGNREGA wages. Thankfully, Das was rescued by his colleagues before the situation escalated further.
Bidyut Das and his fellow GRS colleagues reported the incident to the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Kadamtala, who instructed them to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the Kadamtala police station. The FIR accused Saifuddin and Abdul Aziz of assault.
However, despite the prompt filing of the complaint, local authorities have yet to take any action against the alleged culprits, sparking concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in the area.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the District Magistrate (DM) of Khowai, Chandni Chandran, has taken decisive action by suspending Panchayat Secretary Ramendra Debbarma, who was posted in the Padmabil block.
The suspension comes in the wake of allegations of fund embezzlement related to the Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY) during the 2021–2022 fiscal year.
According to sources in Khowai, an inquiry was initiated to investigate allegations of financial misconduct against Ramendra Debbarma. Subsequently, DM Chandni Chandran reviewed the inquiry report and found concrete evidence of corruption in the implementation of the PMAY programme.
In response to these findings, Ramendra Debbarma was placed under suspension, signalling a commitment to addressing corruption within government programmes. FD SB
