Agartala, June 23 (FD) Tension gripped Kathaltali under Amtali Police Station on the outskirts of Agartala following the murder of a local BJP worker late Monday night, triggering public outrage and protests in the area.
The deceased, identified as Samir Das, was a married youth, BJP worker, and Secretary of Kathaltali Club. According to police and local sources, Das had been involved in a long-standing dispute with local resident Swapan Sutradhar, alias "Sappa."
Preliminary investigations indicate that Samir was returning home on his scooter when he was allegedly intercepted near Kathaltali Shani Mandir and attacked with sharp weapons. Police suspect the assault was linked to an ongoing financial and personal feud.
Samir sustained critical injuries and died at the scene before medical assistance could arrive. Following the incident, the main accused, Swapan Sutradhar, allegedly fled the area.
Family members of the victim claimed that Samir had been receiving threats for some time. His sister alleged that repeated attempts had been made to target him and described the killing as the culmination of a prolonged dispute.
The murder sparked widespread anger among local residents, who gathered in large numbers on Tuesday demanding immediate arrest of all those involved. Amid the heightened tension, an angry crowd allegedly vandalized portions of the residence of one of the accused.
Police personnel from Amtali Police Station, supported by senior officers and additional security forces, were deployed to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Police have arrested one accused, Mithun Sutradhar, in connection with the case, while the prime suspect, Swapan Sutradhar, remains absconding. A search operation is underway to trace and apprehend him.
The incident has raised concerns over violent rivalries in the area, with residents demanding swift justice and stringent action against those responsible. FD JK
