Agartala, Jan 24 (FD): Tension prevailed high at Banamalipur area here after a senior BJP leader was allegedly attacked by the ‘congress sheltered goons’ today.
Police said, one Suman Das, a leader of Schedule Cast community was attacked and grievously injured by sharp cutting weapons in the morning when he was returning home after morning walk.
SDPO Sadar Ajay Kumar Das said, immediately after the attack the injured was rushed to the G B Pant hospital here, where his condition was stated to be critical.
Das said a specific complaint was lodged against four persons, of which two FIR named persons were arrested.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, and Speaker of Tripura assembly Ratan Chakraborty visited the hospital.
Condemning the incident as heinous, the Chief Minister, who is also the Home Minister of the state said the attack was unprovoked and aimed at creating panic before the assembly elections scheduled on February 16.
Hitting out at the poll alliance between Congress and CPI-M, Saha said, for many decades the Congress remained out of power due to their violent nature and the Marxists, who have a vivid past of creating terror for narrow political ends have now joined hands for electoral gains, but people will throw them in the elections.
Former Chief Minister and MP, Biplab Kumar Deb, who hailed from the Banamalipur constituency, said he had spoken to Director General of Police and requested him for immediately arresting the FIR named persons.
However, the Congress has denied the charge of attacking the BJP leader and said that his party workers were not anyway involved with the incident and he demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident.
State Law Minister said that his party will lodge a specific complaint to the Election Commission of India (ECI). FD JK
