Agartala, Apr 25 (FD) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday staged a large protest march across Agartala, targeting the Congress-led opposition bloc over its stand on the Nari Shakti Adhiniyam Bill. Thousands of activists, including members of the party’s women’s wing, Mahila Morcha, took part in the demonstration, raising slogans against the opposition and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Effigies of Gandhi were also burnt during the protest.
The march was organised in multiple parts of the city, with participants carrying placards and voicing strong criticism of what they termed as “anti-women” policies of the opposition alliance. The protest drew significant attention as BJP leaders accused Congress and its allies of obstructing a crucial legislation aimed at enhancing women’s political representation.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha defended the Bill, stating that although it had been enacted earlier, certain amendments were required before implementation. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts were made to expedite the process by proposing the use of the 2011 Census data for delimitation. However, he alleged that the opposition voted against it, effectively stalling the Bill.
Calling the move an injustice to women, Saha said the protest was meant to highlight the opposition’s “anti-women stance.” BJP Tripura Pradesh president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee echoed similar sentiments, claiming that the proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies was blocked due to political motives.
Mahila Morcha president Mimi Majumder also criticised the opposition, alleging that its actions had adversely affected women’s rights. BJP leaders asserted that the strong public turnout reflected widespread support for women’s empowerment and disapproval of what they described as negative politics by the opposition bloc. FD SB
