Agartala, Sept 29 (FD) With elections to 587 Village Committees in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas passing off largely peacefully on Monday, barring a few stray incidents, political attention is now shifting towards the upcoming statewide urban civic elections, which are expected to be held by December this year.
Tripura has 20 urban local bodies, comprising the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), 13 Municipal Councils and six Nagar Panchayats, where elections are due by the end of this year.
The urban local bodies, constituted under the 74th Constitutional Amendment, are subject to constitutional provisions governing their tenure and elections. Their polls are required to be held before the expiry of their terms, except under circumstances provided for by law.
Against this backdrop, the senior BJP leadership on Tuesday held a meeting at Dasharath Deb Smriti Bhawan in the Krishnanagar area of Agartala to discuss organisational preparations for the forthcoming civic elections.
The meeting was attended by BJP Sadar (Urban) president Asim Bhattacharjee, state general secretary Bipin Debbarma and other district- and state-level leaders.
According to party sources, the meeting was convened to review organisational preparedness for the elections to the AMC and the 19 other urban civic bodies across the state.
The leaders reportedly stressed the need to strengthen the party organisation at the grassroots level, mobilise workers and intensify preparations to meet the electoral challenge from opposition parties.
The meeting also discussed the need to counter what the BJP described as disinformation campaigns by opposition parties and alleged attempts to disrupt the electoral process.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Bipin Debbarma said the party leadership would undertake special initiatives to rejuvenate its cadres and workers and familiarise voters with the developmental work carried out by BJP-governed urban local bodies.
He said the party would highlight its achievements in urban governance and development as part of its preparations for the forthcoming elections.
Debbarma added that although the election campaign would gather momentum only after the conclusion of the upcoming Durga Puja festivities, preliminary organisational activities would begin immediately.
The BJP's meeting signals the beginning of its preparations for the urban civic polls, with the party seeking to consolidate its organisational strength across Agartala and other municipal areas ahead of the elections. FD JK
