BJP’s Jahar Chakraborti wins Dharmanagar by-poll by massive margin

Agartala, May 4 (FD) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has retained the Dharmanagar Assembly seat in Tripura’s North District, with its candidate Jahar Chakraborti securing a resounding victory in the by-election. He defeated Congress nominee Chayan Bhattacharjee and CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Datta by a wide margin.
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of Speaker and four-time MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen in December last year.
Polling, held on April 9, witnessed a robust voter turnout of 70.09 per cent in Dharmanagar, reflecting strong public participation.
According to the official results, Chakraborti polled 24,291 votes, securing nearly 68 per cent of the total vote share and winning by a margin of 18,290 votes—one of the highest in recent by-poll history in the state.
CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta finished second with 6,001 votes, while Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee came third with 5,936 votes. Other candidates included Bibash Ranjan Das (Amra Bangalee) with 274 votes, Sanjoy Chaudhury (SUCI-C) with 226 votes, and Independent candidate Brajalal Debnath with 126 votes. NOTA (None of the Above) accounted for 444 votes, surpassing several candidates.
Reacting to the outcome, Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed gratitude to the electorate for the decisive mandate. He said the victory reinforces the government’s responsibility and reiterated its commitment to ensuring development, peace, and progress in the region. FD JK
