Agartala, Mar 24 (FD) BJP MLA Biswabandhu Sen was elected the speaker of the Tripura assembly on Friday.
Sen received 32 votes, while opposition CPI(M)-Congress candidate Gopal Chandra Roy got 14 votes.
Tipra Motha, which has 13 members in the assembly, stayed away from the voting.
Sen, a four-time MLA from Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, was the deputy speaker in the previous assembly.
After the Protem Speaker, Binoy Bhushan Das announced the name of Sen as the winning candidate; he thanked all members in the house.
“I thank all members of the house and would like to assure that I will conduct the house impartially. I also seek cooperation from all members of the house irrespective of their party affiliation”, Sen said.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, while congratulating the speaker said the post of speaker is a dignified one and hoped that he would maintain dignity of the post.
He also assured all cooperation from the side of the treasury bench.
Leader of the CPI-M legislature party, Jiten Chowdhury also congratulated on his win as speaker and assured all cooperation in running the assembly proceedings.
Roy, a Congress legislator, who contested for the post also assured cooperation and requested the newly elected speaker to run the assembly house impartially.
In the Tripura assembly, the BJP-IPFT alliance has 32 MLAs at present as one MLA, Pratima Bhowmick, who is also the union minister of state for Social justice had contested from Dhanpur constituency had resigned immediately after winning the seat.
The opposition Congress and CPI-M jointly have 14 legislators. FD JK
