Agartala, Sept 28 (FD) West Tripura Lok Sabha MP and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb is scheduled to visit New York from October 5 to 9, 2026, as a member of India’s Parliamentary Delegation for the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The 81st UN General Assembly began on September 8, 2026, with India outlining a range of priorities for its engagement at the global forum. According to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, India’s priorities include development and financing, climate action, sustainable development, international peace and security, counter-terrorism, emerging technologies and reform of the multilateral system.
Deb’s scheduled visit comes against the backdrop of the annual high-level gathering at the UN Headquarters in New York, where representatives of member states discuss major international issues. The 81st session is being chaired by UN General Assembly President Dr. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh and is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
As a member of the Parliamentary Delegation, Deb’s visit will form part of India’s parliamentary engagement with the international community during the UNGA session. The visit is expected to provide opportunities for discussions and exchanges on issues connected with India’s international priorities.
Among the key areas highlighted by India for the 81st UNGA are the development priorities of the Global South, financing for sustainable development and climate action. India has also placed emphasis on reforming the United Nations system and making multilateral institutions more responsive to contemporary global challenges.
Counter-terrorism remains another important area of India’s engagement at the United Nations. The Ministry of External Affairs has identified counter-terrorism as a major priority, including stronger multilateral action, capacity building and measures to address terrorist financing and the misuse of emerging technologies.
Emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, are also receiving significant attention at the 81st UNGA. The United Nations has identified AI, climate change, inequality and international peace and security among the major issues being discussed during the current session.
The UNGA provides a major platform for member states to present their national perspectives and engage in multilateral discussions. India’s 81st UNGA priorities also include continued engagement on UN reforms and efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of the multilateral system.
Against this background, Biplab Kumar Deb’s scheduled New York visit from October 5 to 9 will mark his participation in India’s parliamentary representation during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. His engagement will take place as India continues to articulate its positions on development, Global South priorities, climate action, technology, counter-terrorism, peace and security, and United Nations reform.
