Agartala, Aug 24 (FD) The ruling BJP in Tripura was today shot in the arms ahead of the by-elections for the Boxanagar assembly constituency as the Congress working president, Billal Mia joined the saffron party with 7000 supporters.
Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Manik Saha handed over the saffron flag to Mia in a public gathering at the Kulubari school ground in Boxanagar constituency in Sipahijala district.
Mia, also a former minister later told reporters that he had served the Congress party for more than four decades , but joined BJP as there is no ‘inner party democracy and run by a caucus’, which is in league with the CPI-M.
He also said that the BJP was strengthened in Tripura after thousands of Congress activists and leaders joined the party.
“I knew Chief Minister long back as we worked in the same party (Congress). Congress activists and leaders joined BJP due to the clandestine nexus of Congress and CPI-M. I am also satisfied with the good governance delivered by BJP in last six years”, he said.
Chief Minister said more supporters and workers from Congress and CPI-M would join BJP in near future.
Addressing the gathering he said, “You wait for some more time to see more supporters and workers from Congress and CPI-M would join BJP and there would be no party in Tripura except BJP as all will join the party”.
Saha said, Congress is an ‘unruly’ party and CPI-M is a party of ‘murderers’.
“Thousands of people were murdered in Tripura due to political vengeance and many women were raped. But after BJP came to power women are safe and they can sleep at night without worry”, he said.
Mia also resigned from the Congress party on Wednesday and joined BJP on Thursday.
“The Indian National Congress was my home for the last 44 years and during this period, I have served the party in various capacities. At present, I am the working president of TPCC. With immediate effect, I hereby resign from all the party posts of INC along with primary membership,” Mia said in his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
However, Mia was expelled from the party shortly after he resigned from the post.
