Agartala, Jan 29 (FD): The ruling BJP in Tripura today declared that it contest in 55 seats in the sixty-member assembly, while five seats were given to the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), the ally of the saffron party.
The BJP, which ended the 25-year Marxist rule in 2018 elections, had contested in 51 seats, while IPFT contested in nine seats.
BJP had announced the names of 54 candidates yesterday.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who is contesting from the prestigious Bordwali seat said that the party fielded 11 women candidates including Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik and dropped four MLAs.
He also said that BJP believes in long term understanding with its allies and allotted five seats to its junior partner IPFT.
The major opposition CPI-M for the first time contesting the state elections in alliance with the Congress and decided to field candidates in 46 constituencies and one seat was allotted to an independent candidate and the Congress was given 13 seats.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha finalized the candidates for 20 constituencies today.
Out of these, candidates have not been declared for eight ST seats. But candidates names have been announced for eight non-ST seats.
In most of the 20 seats declared by Tipra Motha, their candidates will have to fight directly with the BJP, CPI (M) and Congress candidates.
However, the Tipra Motha Supremo, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma is not contesting from any constituency so far.
The last date of filing nominations for the February 16 elections in the state is January 30 (Tomorrow) FD JK
