Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned today, citing health problems, nearly two years before the end of his five-year term. Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed accepted the resignation. He will serve as acting president until a new president is elected.
Shahabuddin, a former judge and a veteran of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War, became President in April 2023.
