Bangladesh declares transshipment routes, paving the way for Tripura to emerges the gateway for South-East Asia

Agartala, Aug 04 (FD) Brushing aside all speculation the neighboring Bangladesh has declared four transshipment routes through Tripura and paves the way for Tripura becoming the gateway of the South-East Asia.
Tripura Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma said, “The neighboring Bangladesh has declared four transshipment routes for Indian traders in Tripura. These four protocol routes are Chittagong Port-Akhaura-Agartala, Mongla Port-Akhaura-Agartala, Chittagong-Bibirbazar-Srimantapur and Mongla Port- Bibirbazar-Srimantapur. Tripura has emerged as a gateway for trade with Bangladesh”.
She said India signed an agreement with Bangladesh to allow Indian traders to use Chittagong and Mongla ports in Bangladesh for transportation of goods.
Tripura government launched a trial run of goods transport using the Chittagong and Mongla ports of Bangladesh via the two Integrated Check posts – Agartala – Akhaura and Srimantapur –Bibir Bazar in Sipahijala district in mid august last year, official sources said.
Chakma said Tripura government has sent proposal to the central government for setting up nine border haats (markets) along the 856 km long border with Bangladesh.
“ Now, Tripura has two ‘border haats’ at Kamalasagar in Sepahijala district and Srinagar at Sabrom in South Tripura district and works are in progress for two more ‘border haats’ at Dharmanagar in North Tripura and Kamalpur in Dhalai district”, official sources said. FD JK
