Aug 15 Security Threat: Surrendered Militants Warn of State-Wide Blockade in Tripura

Agartala, Aug 5 (FD) Ahead of Independence Day celebrations, major security concerns have emerged in Tripura after more than 400 surrendered militants from now-disbanded insurgent groups threatened to launch a state-wide road blockade on August 15, demanding the immediate fulfilment of their peace agreement.

The announcement was made during a news conference here by Kablajoy Tripura, a leader representing the returnees.

According to Tripura, over 400 cadres belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) laid down their arms in the Jampui region on April 9, 2024. However, he alleged that key provisions of the peace accord signed with the government remain unfulfilled despite more than two years having elapsed.

Highlighting their grievances, Kablajoy stated that returnees have yet to receive the rehabilitation benefits guaranteed under the accord. Furthermore, pending criminal cases against former cadres have not been withdrawn, forcing them to make regular court appearances.

The group’s core demands include:

1. Immediate distribution of official identification cards.
2. Complete rollout of promised rehabilitation benefits.
3. Formal withdrawal of all pending court cases.
4. Full implementation of all terms outlined in the peace agreement.

"Unless the government provides concrete assurances to address our demands before Independence Day, we will have no alternative but to proceed with the planned road blockade on August 15," Kablajoy warned.

Expressing deep resentment over the delay, he noted that repeated appeals to both state and central authorities have yielded no results, warning that bureaucratic inertia undermines the confidence of individuals seeking to reintegrate into mainstream society. FD JK
