Agartala, Sept 10 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday highlighted the significant role of art and fine arts in creating a healthy and progressive society. He was speaking at the inauguration of the five-day Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Government College of Art and Craft in Agartala.
The Chief Minister stressed that spreading creativity, art, and fine arts among students and youth is essential for the growth of a healthy culture. He noted that engaging with art brings unique satisfaction while also creating a universal language of expression. According to him, art education should not be limited to obtaining certificates but should encourage students to think beyond conventional boundaries and showcase their creative potential.
Dr. Saha emphasized that Tripura’s tribal culture and traditional heritage must find wider representation through creative platforms, making them more recognizable to people outside the state. He added that nurturing creativity could not only promote cultural identity but also generate livelihood opportunities for youth. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Vocal for Local” initiative, the Chief Minister urged young artists to transform their art education into a profession for self-reliance.
He also assured that the state government would take more initiatives to further develop the Government College of Art and Craft. Dr. Saha acknowledged the contribution of Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya in the spread of art education in the state.
The event was attended by senior officials, faculty members, alumni, and students. A documentary commemorating the 50-year journey of the college was screened, followed by an exhibition of student artworks. The Chief Minister also felicitated two national award-winning students, first-year entrants, and former teachers of the institution. FD SB
