Agartala, Sept 4 (FD) Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reportedly assured that the Tripartite Agreement concerning the indigenous people of Tripura will be implemented in two phases, with the issue of land rights expected to be addressed within the current month, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
The assurance came during a high-level meeting held at the Union Home Minister’s residence in New Delhi on Friday. The meeting, which lasted around 90 minutes, was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, BJP North East Coordinator Dr. Sambit Patra and senior officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Following the meeting, Chief Minister Manik Saha said in a Facebook post that he had held a “fruitful and constructive discussion” with Amit Shah on matters of mutual importance and the development and welfare of the people of Tripura.
Sources said the discussions focused extensively on the implementation of the Tripartite Agreement, protection of the identity and interests of the indigenous tribal population, and issues related to land rights under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
During the meeting, Shah reportedly assured the leaders that the implementation process would be carried out in two phases. He also assured that necessary land rights documents or land writs would be provided as part of the process, with the matter expected to move forward within this month.
The meeting is being viewed as significant amid ongoing political developments in Tripura and speculation over a possible understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections.
Meanwhile, sources said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha is expected to issue a detailed statement on the outcome of the New Delhi meeting on Saturday after returning to Tripura. FD JK
