Agartala, June 1 (FD) The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday presented a budget of ₹975.91 crore for the current financial year, projecting a deficit of more than ₹97 crore that the civic body expects to bridge through additional resource mobilisation as the year progresses.
The budget proposals were placed before the corporation by Mayor Dipak Majumder for approval. According to AMC officials, the shortfall has largely arisen due to the non-receipt of expected funds under the 15th Finance Commission, which significantly impacted the corporation's financial projections.
Addressing reporters after presenting the budget, Mayor Majumder said the civic body has substantially increased capital expenditure to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve the quality of life for city residents.
He said priority sectors in the budget include sanitation, drainage, sewerage management, drinking water supply, public health and other essential civic services. Special emphasis has also been laid on continuing the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, to improve cleanliness and waste management across the city.
One of the most notable features of the budget is the proposal to raise additional resources through the issuance of municipal bonds worth ₹1 crore. The move marks a significant step towards exploring market-based financing mechanisms for urban development projects and civic infrastructure expansion.
Municipal bonds are increasingly being adopted by urban local bodies across the country as an alternative source of funding for infrastructure projects, reducing dependence on grants and government allocations.
However, sources within the AMC indicated that the growing budgetary pressure and the need to explore alternative financing options have also been linked to financial constraints faced by the corporation in recent years. The civic body will now focus on enhancing revenue generation and improving resource mobilisation to meet its expenditure commitments and development goals.
The budget is expected to be discussed further before its final adoption, with the corporation aiming to ensure continued investment in urban infrastructure and public services despite the projected fiscal gap. FD JK
