Agartala, Aug 11 (FD) In a significant move aimed at boosting the city's overall development, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has given the green light to a budget of INR 397 crore. The budget presentation occurred in the presence of all corporators and was subsequently endorsed after discussions on Thursday.
Mayor Dipak Majumdar, in a press conference, highlighted the key focus areas for the budget allocation. These encompass the revitalization of roads and drainage systems, the installation of street lighting, the establishment of fitness centers, and the creation of public parks.
However, Mayor Majumdar revealed a deficit of over 55 lakh rupees in the approved budget. He assured that this shortfall would be offset using the corporation's internal revenue sources.
In a noble gesture to honor families who have sacrificed for the nation, Agartala Pur Nigam has decided to offer a 10 percent tax discount to the families of martyrs.
Mayor Majumdar emphasized the AMC's dedication to residents' basic needs, pledging to maintain transparency and cleanliness within the city. Despite these efforts, a pressing concern persists regarding waste management. Currently, a staggering 50 percent of waste material remains uncollected from house to house.
Furthermore, some residents unconsciously contribute to littering, particularly at night, with improper garbage disposal into drains. This hampers cleanliness efforts.
Mayor Majumdar expressed regret that only 49 percent of citizens contribute taxes, despite persistent demands for better drainage, road repairs, and access to clean water. He stressed that proper tax collection is imperative for successful developmental projects.
In response to the escalating dengue situation, Mayor Majumdar mandated zonal officers to conduct regular mosquito repellent spraying and drain cleaning. If necessary, individuals will also be appointed to distribute bleaching powder to residences to combat dengue.
The developments underscore AMC's dedication to holistic city growth, albeit challenges that need collective community effort. FD SB
