Agartala, Aug 21 (FD) Although the annual Durga Puja festival is still about two months away, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has begun preparations to ensure that the celebrations are clean, trouble-free, disciplined and environmentally friendly.
As part of the initiative, AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder and Ward No. 39 Corporator Alak Roy on Friday held an interactive session with media persons at the Ward No. 39 office to outline plans for the upcoming festival.
Appealing to Durga Puja organisers to make community celebrations more attractive, disciplined, smooth and eco-friendly, the Mayor and the Corporator announced that the AMC would introduce a series of awards this year to recognise outstanding Puja committees and social organisations.
“We have decided to reward clubs and social organisations under several categories, including best idol, best pandal, best Puja organised on a small budget, best Puja promoting environmental awareness, best discipline and best souvenir,” Mayor Dipak Majumder and Corporator Alak Roy said.
The AMC will also place special emphasis on highlighting the contribution and relevance of Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, with the aim of connecting the younger generation with India’s cultural and literary heritage.
Majumder said Durga Puja was not merely a religious festival but also a major socio-cultural celebration deeply intertwined with the history, culture and traditions of Tripura.
He urged all prospective Puja organisers to remain conscious of their social and civic responsibilities and ensure that the celebrations are conducted in an orderly and environmentally responsible manner.
Ward No. 39 Corporator Alak Roy said the Puja committees and organisations selected for the awards would be felicitated at a special function scheduled to be held at the auditorium of Arundhati Nagar Higher Secondary School on the evening of November 1. FD JK
