Agartala, July 16 (FD) The All India Services Association, Tripura Chapter, has strongly condemned the remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury against the Superintendent of Police (SP) of South Tripura district, describing the comments as "derogatory, inappropriate and unbecoming" of a constitutional functionary.
In a joint press statement issued on Wednesday, the Association said referring to a serving Indian Police Service (IPS) officer as an "idiot" while the officer was discharging official duties was unacceptable and undermined the dignity of the civil services as well as public institutions.
The Association maintained that the Superintendent of Police was performing his statutory responsibilities in accordance with the law and that personal attacks on officers acting in good faith could adversely affect the morale of the police force and the broader civil services, besides weakening public confidence in democratic governance.
"Public servants entrusted with maintaining law and order must be allowed to perform their duties without being subjected to personal insults or unwarranted attacks," the statement said.
While recognising the right of elected representatives to question government policies and administrative decisions, the Association emphasised that such criticism should remain constructive and respectful. It said democratic accountability should be exercised within the bounds of civility and institutional decorum, rather than through abusive or derogatory remarks directed at individual officers.
The Association further alleged that the Leader of the Opposition had, on previous occasions, made unsubstantiated and offensive allegations against several senior state government officials. It said repeated personal attacks on public servants without credible evidence were irresponsible and detrimental to the dignity of public institutions and the morale of officers discharging their lawful responsibilities.
Expressing concern over the incident, the Association urged Chaudhury to withdraw his remarks and issue an unconditional public apology to the Superintendent of Police.
It also appealed to all public representatives, irrespective of political affiliation, to uphold the principles of civility, mutual respect and institutional dignity essential for the healthy functioning of democratic institutions.
The joint statement was signed by Er. Rajesh Kumar Das on behalf of the IAS Association, Tripura Chapter, R. Darlong representing the IPS Association, Tripura Chapter, and S. Prabhu on behalf of the IFS Association, Tripura Chapter, reflecting the collective position of the three All India Services associations in the state. FD JK
