Agartala, Sept 21 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday announced a major expansion in the MBBS intake capacity of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), with the number of seats increasing from 150 to 250 for the academic year 2026-27.
Sharing the development, Saha said the addition of 100 MBBS seats would provide greater opportunities for aspiring medical students from Tripura while strengthening the state’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
“Pleased to share a significant milestone for medical education in Tripura,” the Chief Minister said, while expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda for their support in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state.
With the increased intake, AGMC will now offer 250 MBBS seats, placing it among major medical institutions in the country with a similar annual intake capacity.
Saha cited institutions including Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow as examples of institutions with an intake capacity of 250 MBBS seats.
The expansion is expected to increase the number of medical graduates trained in the state and contribute to the availability of trained medical professionals in Tripura.
“We hope that a stronger medical education system will build a healthier Tripura soon,” Saha said.
The increase in AGMC’s intake comes amid efforts by the state government to expand medical education and healthcare facilities and create more opportunities for students seeking professional medical education within Tripura. FD JK
