Agartala, May 16 (FD) Doctors at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital have successfully performed a rare and complex liver-related surgery for the first time in Tripura, offering new hope to patients suffering from severe portal hypertension and liver complications within the state.
The patient, a 42-year-old man from Udaipur in Gomati district, had been suffering for a long time from complicated liver-related ailments. He was repeatedly admitted to hospitals with severe abdominal pain, abdominal swelling and episodes of blood vomiting.
Later, he approached the Gastroenterology and Gastrosurgery departments of AGMC and GBP Hospital for advanced treatment. After detailed medical examinations, specialist gastrosurgeon Dr Dipankar Shankar Mitra diagnosed him with Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension and advised immediate surgical intervention.
Considering the complexity of the case, Dr Mitra consulted cardiovascular surgeon Dr Konaknarayan Bhattacharya. The medical team decided to perform a Splenorenal Vascular Shunt along with a Splenectomy to reduce portal hypertension and control falling haemoglobin levels.
However, due to the patient’s unstable condition, he was shifted to the Cardiovascular Department on April 6. After nearly a month of intensive treatment and monitoring, doctors stabilised him for surgery.
On May 13, a 10-member surgical team led by Dr Bhattacharya and Dr Mitra successfully carried out the five-hour-long operation. During the procedure, the damaged spleen was removed and a vascular shunt connecting the portal vein and kidney vein was created.
The patient is currently under observation in the CTVS ICU and is reported to be stable and recovering gradually. Doctors said such advanced treatment was previously unavailable in Tripura, forcing patients to seek care outside the state. The patient’s family expressed gratitude to the doctors and health workers for conducting the expensive surgery free of cost under government healthcare services. FD SB
