Agartala, July 28 (FD) In a significant achievement for Tripura's cultural and musical heritage, noted Indian classical musician Dr. Joyanta Sarkar of Agartala has been granted an Indian patent for the Tripureshwari Veena, a newly conceptualised string instrument that blends Indian classical music with the state's indigenous artistic traditions, scientific innovation and spiritual philosophy.
Inspired by Maa Tripureshwari (Tripura Sundari)—the presiding deity of Tripura and one of India's 51 Shakti Peethas—the instrument has been designed to preserve and promote the state's unique cultural identity while introducing a contemporary innovation in Indian classical music.
According to Dr. Sarkar, the Tripureshwari Veena combines the timeless principles of the traditional veena with Tripura's rich craftsmanship, folk music traditions and artistic heritage. He described the instrument as a symbol of the harmonious convergence of spirituality, culture, science and innovation, reflecting the state's legacy while offering a new musical medium for future generations.
As detailed in the patent document, the Tripureshwari Veena is a modern Indian classical string instrument that integrates features of the traditional slide guitar with the tonal depth of classical instruments such as the veena, sitar and sarod. Its design incorporates scientific principles of vibration, resonance, acoustics, harmonics and wave motion to produce a rich, expressive sound capable of rendering complex Indian ragas.
One of its distinguishing features is the incorporation of sympathetic strings, which resonate naturally when corresponding notes are played, creating a fuller and more sustained tonal effect. The instrument also employs a slide-playing technique that enables smooth note transitions (meend) and the production of microtones (shrutis), both of which are integral to Indian classical music.
The patented design further integrates several modern innovations, including an adjustable bridge, fine-tuning pegs, lightweight wood-composite construction, compatibility with piezoelectric pickups for stage performances and digital tuning support, while preserving the traditional aesthetics and acoustic character of Indian classical instruments.
