Agartala, July 3 (FD) In a major step towards strengthening urban healthcare infrastructure, the Tripura government is set to operationalise the long-awaited Agartala Civil Hospital, a 50-bed healthcare facility designed to reduce the patient load on the state's two premier referral institutions—GBP Hospital-cum-Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital.
Chief Minister Manik Saha is expected to inaugurate the hospital shortly, with all major infrastructure works having been completed, Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte announced on Friday.
The move comes at a significant time, following the state government's recent decision to prohibit private practice by faculty members and medical officers of GBP Hospital and AGMC. The government expects the measure, along with the opening of the new civil hospital, to improve the availability and quality of healthcare services in public hospitals.
Addressing reporters, Gitte said the new hospital has been established primarily to serve residents of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area by providing accessible primary and secondary healthcare services.
"Chief Minister Manik Saha will open Agartala Civil Hospital for the benefit of people residing within the AMC area. The infrastructure is fully ready, and the hospital will be inaugurated soon," he said.
The hospital has a capacity of 50 beds and has been equipped with modern healthcare facilities to meet the routine medical needs of the city's growing population. The Health Department has already deployed around 60 medical officers, nurses and allied healthcare personnel to ensure smooth functioning from the day of its inauguration.
Officials said the hospital will function as the first point of care for common illnesses, minor emergencies and routine medical services, allowing tertiary care institutions to focus on patients requiring specialised treatment.
"We are of the view that it would reduce unnecessary crowding at GBP Hospital and IGM Hospital. Patients requiring primary treatment can avail services at the Civil Hospital, while referral hospitals will be able to concentrate on advanced and specialised medical care," Gitte said.
The establishment of the new civil hospital is expected to significantly decongest these facilities and improve overall patient management.
The government believes the initiative will strengthen the state's public healthcare delivery system by creating a more efficient referral mechanism, improving access to quality treatment for urban residents, and enhancing patient care across government hospitals. FD JK
