Agartala, June 25 (FD) In a major push towards strengthening healthcare services across Tripura, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte on Thursday outlined several significant initiatives being undertaken by the state government to enhance medical infrastructure, healthcare delivery, and human resource development in the health sector.
Addressing a press conference held at the Secretariat Conference Hall, Kiran Gitte informed that Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha earlier in the day laid the foundation stone for the new building of Sepahijala District Hospital. The hospital will be constructed over approximately 14 acres of land at an estimated cost of ₹46 crore. He noted that the foundation stone for the district hospital has been laid 15 years after the formation of Sepahijala district, marking a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare development.
The Health Secretary further stated that infrastructure development work is currently underway at Jirania, Mohanpur, Jampuijala Sub-Divisional Hospitals, as well as Gomati District Hospital. Efforts have also been initiated to construct a new district hospital in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district.
Highlighting improvements in healthcare manpower, Gitte revealed that 214 doctors were recently recruited by the state government, out of which 160 have already joined service. Since several selected candidates did not join due to various reasons, the government has initiated the process of recruiting an additional 40 doctors from the waiting list. Approval has also been received from the Finance Department for further recruitment of medical professionals in the coming days.
He emphasized that the present state government has consistently prioritized healthcare infrastructure, service delivery, and human resource development since assuming office. Several programs and projects have been undertaken to improve healthcare accessibility and quality throughout the state.
According to official records, the number of patients being referred outside the state for treatment has declined by nearly 80 percent, reflecting significant improvements in healthcare facilities available within Tripura. However, a shortage of radiologists continues at GBP Hospital and AGMC. To address this issue, the government is planning to introduce tele-radiology services, enabling faster and more efficient diagnostic support.
A major announcement made during the press conference was regarding the Agartala Civil Hospital located near Jackson Gate. Gitte stated that construction work at the hospital has been completed and the government is preparing to make the facility operational from next month. The hospital is expected to provide services in two shifts, significantly increasing patient access to healthcare services.
Additionally, the Health Department is considering introducing two-shift services in selected departments at GBP Hospital and IGM Hospital to improve patient care and reduce waiting times.
Speaking on the state’s tuberculosis control efforts, National Health Mission (NHM) Director Saju Wahid said that Tripura is progressing in the right direction toward eliminating TB. He elaborated on various measures being implemented to achieve the goal of tuberculosis eradication in the state.
Among others present at the press conference were Health Department Director Dr. Debashree Debbarma and GBP Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami. The officials reiterated the government’s commitment to building a stronger and more accessible healthcare system for the people of Tripura. FD JK
