Agartala, Sept 25 (FD) Preparatory work for the construction of Agartala’s second flyover is progressing, with the proposed 3.98-km elevated corridor aimed at easing traffic congestion in the state capital and improving connectivity between AD Nagar and Radhanagar.
The project is awaiting financial clearance from the Union Finance Ministry, following which the construction process is expected to begin after completion of the requisite statutory tender formalities.
According to the alignment finalised by the authorities, the proposed flyover will originate near Fire Brigade Chaumuhuni, branching off from the existing flyover, and proceed towards Durga Chaumuhuni. It will then cross the Katakhal area before terminating at Radhanagar bus stand, beyond Astabol Chaumuhuni.
The elevated corridor is expected to have multiple exit and entry points along densely populated stretches to facilitate convenient access for vehicles travelling through different parts of the city.
Sources in the Public Works Department (PWD), which will serve as the nodal agency for the project, said the flyover would provide a direct connection between AD Nagar and Radhanagar across Agartala, helping ease the traffic burden on busy city roads.
The preliminary estimated cost of the project has been pegged at Rs 678 crore. However, the expenditure could increase depending on the cost of land acquisition required for construction through several congested stretches of the city, particularly up to the Durga Chaumuhuni police outpost.
Sources said an earlier proposal envisaged constructing the second flyover along Akhaura Road, Jagannath Bari Road, Bidur Karta and Colonel Chaumuhuni up to the North Gate. An amount of Rs 65 crore had reportedly been earmarked for land acquisition under that proposal.
However, the earlier alignment was subsequently abandoned for various reasons, and the authorities finalised the present route.
According to departmental sources, the project will require clearances from the Union Finance Ministry and NITI Aayog, in addition to approval from the state Finance Department, before the tendering process can begin.
Officials expressed hope that the necessary clearances and fund allocation would be completed within the next few months, paving the way for the tender process to commence early next year.
Once completed, the second flyover is expected to provide an alternative elevated route across key traffic bottlenecks, improve connectivity between residential and commercial areas, and facilitate smoother movement of vehicles through Agartala. FD JK
